hijama/wet cupping is an ancient arabic therapy for treating many illnesses by applying vacuum stimulation to certain points of the body, causing a local tissue congestion, in which a healing effect takes place. hijama is a safe, non-invasive and economical way of curing and preventing many diseases.
About Hijama
Hijama or cupping is a type of regimental therapy practiced since time immemorial by traditional health practitioner in order to remove the waste material or toxins like substances accumulated in blood under aseptic conditions. With the increasing cost of surgical care and growing resistance to antibiotic organisms the governments around the world are emphasizing on preventive care through Alternative medicine. HIJAMA is a type of Regimental therapy traditionally done throughout the Islamic countries.

Types of hijama or cupping.
- Dry Hijama or Dry cupping ((من دون تشريط
- Wet Hijama or Wet Cupping(بتشريط)
- Sliding or Gliding cupping.
Dry cupping: By applying glass cups or silicon or plastic cups on the hijama points for various disorders the blood circulation is activated but without any scarification. usually dry cupping is preceded before wet cupping or it is done alone.
- Wet Hijama or Wet cupping:
After the dry cupping the cups are gently removed and duly following aseptic measures using a single use disposable surgical blade small scarifications are done on the Hijama points and again cups are applied on the same surface, because of the negative pressure applied on the cups the blood oozes out into the cups through the scarification.. Wet cupping is the most commonly practiced form of Hijama currently throughout the world. Wet cupping when done under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner is done in a aseptic environment duly following all the precautionary measures laid down by the Abudhabi health authority.(HAAD).

There are three types of Cupping (Hijama):
- Dry cupping (hijama)
- Dry massage cupping (hijama)
- Wet cupping (hijama)
Cupping (Hijama) is a cure for every disease if performed in its correct time. The Messenger said, “Indeed in cupping (Hijama) there is a cure.” [Saheeh Muslim (5706)]. Said, “Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” [Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

Sunnah Points In Our Body
Several hadith for Hijama have proven that Hijama cupping therapy is the sunnah of our beloved Holy Prophet (PBUM). The treatment of Hijama cupping therapy is an Islamic, natural and prophetic remedy for various common diseases. It was a standard method used by the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions to deal with several ailments.
During the night journey and ascension (Laylatu’l Isra), our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) experienced many crucial events. Amongst all the other miracles, Allah (SWT) the Exalted, ordered the angels to instruct Prophet (PBUM) to establish Hijama cupping therapy.
Angels told Rasool Allah (PBUM): “Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with Hijama”.
Saheeh Sunnan Tirmidhi(3479)
Abdullah ibn Abbas (R.A) reported Rasool Allah (PBUM) saying, “I did not pass by any angel during my night journey that did not tell me:Make it necessary upon you to have Hijama”.

There is a total of 9 sunnah points of the body where Rasool Allah (PBUH) performed Hijama Cupping therapy. These points are called the sunnah points and each sunnah point has extensive benefits. The Sunnah points used for Hijama are mentioned below.
Sunnah point to the Head
The head sunnah points are very crucial sunnah points because these points cleanse the entire head, which includes the brain, eyes, ears, gums, teeth and neck. The suction in the cup allows blood to flow freely and carry vital oxygen to the brain. The fresh and oxygenated blood cells nourish the brain and enable the whole body to function properly. Plenty of diseases for instance; migraines, headaches, sinusitis, glaucoma, vertigo, acne and several skin problems may be cured by the will of Allah(SWT).
Head Hijama points help with high blood pressure. When the toxic blood clogs the arteries and veins in the head, that produce high blood pressure. When the stagnated blood departs from the head, the head becomes lighter.
Head Hijama points also help with mental health issues such as stroke, brain hemorrhages and memory loss.
Abdullah ibn Abbas (R.A) reported that Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) was cupped on his head.

Abdullah ibn Abbas (R.A) also reported that Messenger (PBUH) was cupped on his head for a severe headache while He was in Ihraam.

Sunnah point to the Neck
The second and third sunnah points are at the back of the neck, just below the hairline. This point is known as ‘Al-Akhda’ain’. These points are in the closeness of regularly utilized acupuncture points called “Feng Chi” which translates to “wind pool”.
It is believed that several pathogens enter the body through this area, therefore treating this area is beneficial for several ailments of the head and neck including migraines, headaches, vertigo, muscular pains, stiffness of the neck, blurry vision, red or swelled eyes, tinnitus, sinus and nasal issues, toothache, sore throat, runny nose, fever and the common cold. These points are also useful for insomnia and also have an amazing effect on the nervous system.
Anas bin Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that The Messenger(PBUH) was treated with cupping 3 times on the two veins on the side of the neck and the base of the neck. Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawud (3860), Sunnah ibn Majjal(3483).

Sunnah point to the Shoulder
The fourth sunnah point is located between the shoulder blades. It is known as Al-Kahil. According to a hadith, this particular area may cover seventy-two diseases of a body. This particular point is one of the best points to perform general Hijama as this is the area where toxins and impurities in the blood accumulate. In traditional Chinese medicine, this point is considered to be the meeting point of the blood.
This point is especially beneficial for all sorts of blood disorders whether it is for deficiency or excess blood. These points may contain maximum blood toxins and contamination.
This point is located at the lowest level of the neck. Hijama on this point may cure headaches, flu, cough, asthma, high blood pressure, constipation, hair loss, muscular pains, skin issues, back pain and several other health problems.
Narrated by Ibn Majah, the angel Jibreel advised Prophet (PBUH) to perform Hijama on Akhda’ain and al-kahil.
Abdullah bin bauhinia (r.a) reported that our Prophet (PBUH) took Hijama on Haamah and between the shoulders( Al-Kahil).
Sunnah point to the Waist
The seventh and eighth sunnah points, known as Al-Waraq, are located on the right and left sides of the waist, parallel with the navel.
Waist sunnah points are beneficial in many ways. These points work amazingly with menstrual problems, irregular periods, menopause, menstrual cramps, difficulty in urination, digestive disorders, lower abdominal issues, gastrointestinal problems, bowel disorders, back pain, sciatica pains, weak muscles and legs, constipation, Blooting, kidney issues and poor blood circulation.
Jaabir Ibn Abdullah(r.a) reported that Rasool Allah (PBUH) was cupped on his hips for pain relief in that area.
Sunnah point to the Foot
According to the sunnah of the Prophet, Hijama on the feet may help to cure headaches, mental disorders, gout-related problems, arthritis, swelling, releases hypertension, fertility problems, Weak muscles in the legs, detoxification of the whole body, and Heel pains like plantar Fasciitis. This point also boosts the nervous system and the immune system which helps to fight against viruses and infections.
Hijama cupping therapy is a very simple procedure which has immediate physical results. Hijama treatment has been used by people with different cultural backgrounds since prehistoric days. It has been used to cure a variety of diseases. We, Muslims use it as a Sunnah Rasool. Hijama works by sucking out the toxic blood and promoting fresh blood and oxygen to the body. The toxic and stagnated blood is the primary cause of plenty of illnesses. Removing these risk factors helps to revive health and avoid sickness.
Jaabir Ibn Abdullah reported that the Messenger (PBUH) fell from his horse onto the trunk of the palm tree and dislocated his foot, so He was cupped on the bruising.
